Building Your Ministry Dream Team: Step 1, Identify the Right People

Part of my Building Your Ministry Dream Team series.

Most ministry teams don't have a commitment problem. They have a placement problem.

I coached over 200 volunteers into ministry roles over six years. The ones who thrived weren't the most eager. They were the ones placed against their actual wiring, not just their willingness.

Here's what I learned running that pipeline.

Enthusiasm tells you someone wants to serve. It doesn't tell you where.

A high-energy connector in a data entry role burns out in three months. A steady, detail-driven leader thrown onto a greeting team feels drained by 10am every Sunday. Neither failed. They got placed wrong.

Three questions I ask before I place anyone on a team:

Does this role match how they're naturally wired to interact with people, not just whether they like people.

Does the pace of this role match their pace. Fast and reactive, or steady and process-driven.

Would this role drain them by week four, even if they said yes with a full heart in week one.

Get this right and you stop losing volunteers to burnout. You start building teams that actually last.

Identifying the right person isn't a gut feeling. It's a system. And it's the difference between a team that runs on willpower and a team that runs on fit.

What's one role on your team right now where the wrong fit is quietly draining someone?
